Whitesboro’s Section III Scholar Athletes Recognized

Seniors Kristyn Deuel and Tom Giglio were selected as the Section III Scholar Athletes from Whitesboro. Both were formally recognized by Section III on June 8 during a ceremony at the SRC Arena on the Onondaga Community College campus.
Kristyn is the daughter of Donna and Michael Deuel of Whitesboro. She is a three letter sport athlete in soccer, basketball and softball. Kristyn plans to attend SUNY Polytechnic Institute in the fall and enroll in its nursing program.
Tom is the son of Tina and Thomas Giglio of Schuyler. He is a two letter sport athlete in ice hockey and baseball. Tom plans to attend Utica College in the fall and major in physical therapy.

Girls Varsity Track Competes at State Quals, Has a Strong Showing

Six members of the Whitesboro Girls Varsity Track team competed at the State Qualifier Meet on June 5 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.  Although no one advanced to the State Meet, Whitesboro still had a strong showing and came close to sending a couple of individuals to states.

Girls Varsity Track Team:

The 4x400m relay team, consisting of freshmen Marissa Burke and Cailyn Onate and juniors Taylor Klosek and Halia Todd, finished in 4th place with a time of 4:14.47 – – less than half a second off of the school record.

Marissa Burke also competed in the high jump and came in 3rd place thanks to a jump that cleared five feet.

Emilie Mull finished in 7th place in shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 4.75 inches.

Justyna Wilkinson finished in 2nd place in the 2,000m steeplechase with a time of 7:12.38. She finished in 7th place in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:35.91.

Boys Varsity Track Competes at State Quals, Has a Strong Showing

Four members of the Whitesboro Boys Varsity Track team competed at the State Qualifier Meet on June 5 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.  Although no one advanced to the State Meet, Whitesboro still had a strong showing and came close to sending a couple of individuals to states.

Boys Varsity Track Team:

Derrick Sica finished in 2nd place – – just three points shy of 1st – – in the pentathlon with 2,726 points.

Nick Ashton broke the two minute barrier in the 800m run with a time of 1:59.78.

Aaron Burke finished in 3rd place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.01.

Tyler Sutton finished in 9th place in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:41.01.

Flynn and Schmidt Combine for the Shutout, Whitesboro Varsity Baseball Team Advances to Quarterfinals

The Whitesboro Varsity Baseball team is off to a good start in sectionals.

The sixth seeded Warriors, now 11-8 overall, defeated Homer 4-0 in a first round Section III Class A playoff game, at home, on May 26.

Whitesboro senior and right-hander, Kevin Flynn, pitched six strong innings, striking out seven batters, while only allowing seven hits. Whitesboro’s Steven Schmidt closed things out in the 7th inning to notch the shutout victory.  Whitesboro Warriors logo

Matt Parkinson drove in three runs for the Warriors. He gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead when he doubled to left centerfield with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, and later drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.

Whitesboro will travel to VVS on May 28 to play the state-ranked Red Devils in a Section III Class A quarterfinal game. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. The Red Devils are 17-2 overall and beat Chittenango 15-0 in the first round of sectionals.

Whitesboro and third seeded VVS played each other twice during the regular season. VVS won both times by one run, 5-4 on April 15 and 4-3 on May 21 – – just six days ago. But, don’t count out the Warriors. During the regular season, the team was in the hunt for a victory every game. They lost six games by two runs or less and only lost one game by more than three runs.

Kevin Flynn leads Whitesboro’s starters with a .516 batting average. He also has a 4-2 record on the mound for the Warriors.

The Whitesboro/VVS winner will advance to the Section III Class A semifinals on May 30 at Onondaga Community College.
