The Whitesboro Varsity Baseball team is off to a good start in sectionals.
The sixth seeded Warriors, now 11-8 overall, defeated Homer 4-0 in a first round Section III Class A playoff game, at home, on May 26.
Whitesboro senior and right-hander, Kevin Flynn, pitched six strong innings, striking out seven batters, while only allowing seven hits. Whitesboro’s Steven Schmidt closed things out in the 7th inning to notch the shutout victory.
Matt Parkinson drove in three runs for the Warriors. He gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead when he doubled to left centerfield with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, and later drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
Whitesboro will travel to VVS on May 28 to play the state-ranked Red Devils in a Section III Class A quarterfinal game. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. The Red Devils are 17-2 overall and beat Chittenango 15-0 in the first round of sectionals.
Whitesboro and third seeded VVS played each other twice during the regular season. VVS won both times by one run, 5-4 on April 15 and 4-3 on May 21 – – just six days ago. But, don’t count out the Warriors. During the regular season, the team was in the hunt for a victory every game. They lost six games by two runs or less and only lost one game by more than three runs.
Kevin Flynn leads Whitesboro’s starters with a .516 batting average. He also has a 4-2 record on the mound for the Warriors.
The Whitesboro/VVS winner will advance to the Section III Class A semifinals on May 30 at Onondaga Community College.
Good luck to the Whitesboro Varsity Baseball team!
